NEW CLASSIC JAZZ PROGRAMS RECEIVE FUNDING FROM DCCAH!
Momentum is proud to announce that our Classic Jazz Dance Program has won TWO grants from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities!
The grants support a dream of ours: to bring Classic Jazz Dance to wider attention in the Washington, DC area through our Classic Jazz Dance Program!
Program 1:
An Elders in Learning Through the Arts grant funds new Classic Jazz Performance Project for anyone 60 years old and over who is a DC resident. That’s right! Not only are you never too old to dance but this program will teach you and show off your skills! Over a 10 week period, participants will take class in Classic Jazz Techniques, learn and rehearse choreography and develop a lecture demonstration program to be performed in area schools and nursing homes. There will be a final performance in Momentum’s June 2011 concert.
Program 2:
The second DCCAH grant, a Small Projects Grant, enabled us to bring Master Teacher Roy Lozano from New York City to conduct Special Master Classes in Classic Jazz Dance, Matt Maddox and Jack Cole styles. Mr. Lozano was a student of both Jazz Dance legends and teaches their demanding, subtle, smooth and sensuous technique. This technique, part of the cultural history of this great American art form, underpin the modern jazz class. It is hard to find classes in this technique in the Washington, DC.
The Master Classes were held February 27th and May 1st at Results Gym. What a treat! It was great to have Roy back for a “repeat performance”!
Master Classes were held Sunday February 27 at Results the Gym Capitol Hill
If you would are interested in future Master Classes with Roy Lozano, please call 202.785-0035 or Email us: momentumdancetheatre@verizon.net.

Tentative class time: Thursday mornings 10-11:30. Tentative rehearsal time: Mondays, time tbd. The project culminates in lecture/demonstrations to be performed in late May and early June at two schools and senior centers and in the Spring Momentum Dance Concert.
All CJP performers receive a small honorarium for the project.
In addition Classic Jazz Technique Classes will be held Thursdays 10-11:30am at the Corner Store (9th & S Carolina Ave SE in Capitol Hill). These classes are open to the entire over 60 community ($6 per class for non CJP performers).
