| Dear Supporter:
I know how much the arts mean to you. We at Momentum Dance Theatre are grateful for your past interest and support. Believe me, in the arts it is always a struggle to survive and we have managed to not only survive but thrive, due in large measure to you as an audience and/or contributor. Now we are in preparation for our 6th annual Jazz, Hip Hop Nutcracker. Yes it’s true that we have institutionalized our fun, funky production on the Washington scene! We can hardly believe it is the 6th year of the JHHN. We have many young dancers returning to perform in their 2nd, 3rd or even 4th JHHN, joined by a new group of talented children and teens from all over the Washington area. As always, they will be joining our professional company and guest artists to perform for two weekends in December (December 10-11 and December 16-18 at Stuart Hobson Middle School in Capitol Hill--See Jazz, Hip Hop Nutcracker page). This is a professional production with a professional budget giving area children and Washington adult dancers terrific performing opportunities. But we always keep ticket prices low to encourage a diverse audience. We need you to be one of our "angels" to help fund the production. There’s another program I am excited about and, of course, you can help fund. Building on its years of performing for and teaching in schools and community centers, Momentum is expanding our relationship with the DC Public Schools. We developed a program called "Dance In Its Time", which combines training in jazz, hip hop and 20th cetnury social dance with social history and economics. It is an example of arts integration which is so effective and yet is a victim of school funding cutbacks. This past year, we were awarded a grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities to conduct "Dance In Its Time" at Stuart Hobson Middle School, a DC Public School. It is, of course, a matching grant and we managed to raise the funds. It was so popular that we have been asked to do it at other schools. So we need to raise more funds. Can you help these students and this dynamic program? A few examples of where your support goes: $30 1 pair of Jazz Shoes for Dance In Its Time $50 2 children's costumes for Jazz, Hip Hop Nutcracker $75 2 teaching hours in DIIT at A DCPS School $100 10 JHHN tickets for low income children $150 Cost of two teachers for 2 weeks of Dance In Its Time $500 1 Momentum outreach performance for children $800 Staff costs for a 10 week Dance In Its Time program $1500 A full cast free performance of Jazz, Hip Hop Nutcracker at a DC public School. We know a lot of organizations ask for your dollars. Please put us on your list of giving to help us spread our mission of quality dance education, outreach and performance. These small contributions make a big difference in the lives of children, parents and our community. Sincerely, Roberta Rothstein, Artistic Director |
